What is the common way to wire an on roof tripod antenna into the house?
I have an older tripod mount roof antenna (analog TV), installed by a roofer after he broke mine, 10 years ago. Over the past 2 years reception has grown very poor on some stations. So I went up on the roof and pointed the antenna in the correct direction, but also noticed it needs to be rewired, (the wire coating has peeled away and the remaining tubing is cracked), and realized that the roofer attached the wiring in an unusual way…through the bottom of an aluminum vent that looks sort of like a flattened square metal mushroom. Unfortunately, to replace it at this spot, I’d have to disturb the seal with no way (no knowledge & no tar) to seal it back properly. I was told that is not the normal way to run the wire into the house. What is the normal way? It’s a two story house, with the outdoor antenna hooked up to1st floor den and 2nd floor bedroom. The other bedroom only has rabbit ears and that reception is really bad! Thanks for your help.
Without penetrating the roof and sealing around it you could run wire down the roof and drill into the attic but the wire probably would need to be on stand offs to keep it from rubbing the shingles. silicone sealer works better than tar in this situation, it stays flexible. In addition you can run wire through the wall to that bedroom by using what is called a splitter.I didn’t understand if you currently have flat type wire or round coax. You should definitely go back with coax, when stations go all digital you will hook direct to the converter or new TV.Try drawing up a rough diagram of antenna and house take it to your local ma and paw TV store or radio shack they can tell you how to hook up both TVs.
