I have no Prius, but I'm looking for a system batteries that could be used to support my HAM radio in the case of an emergency. Four radios drawing about 30 amps each, along with two computers, lights and antenna rotators. My intention is to recharge the solar system, wind and / or generator. My "Shack is intended to be self-sufficient network and off.

I'm not one yourself, then all I had to say about this would be only second-hand. For emergency power, can 3KVA run up the Prius. This was done by several in the last major hurricane in Florida. http://priups.com/ have any information, as well as the Yahoo group Technical Prius.
I purchased the Antennas Direct – Multidirectional Indoor/Outdoor HDTV Antenna (DB2) after reading some good reviews about it. Any opinions or other suggestions? I do not subscribe to cable or satellite and only receive free local channels.
The first 2 answers are fairly incorrect… It depends where you live.
Assuming you don’t live right next to the antenna tower, you need a powered, DTV antenna for reception. If you don’t have one the picture won’t work when it rains and some channels wont come in at all.

Ham radio operators are blocking “Internet over power lines”. Everybody has electricity coming into their homes and internet service can ride in on those wires. however it will radiate a signal that will jam a particular band of frequencies that Ham Operators use. They claim that they are there for communication in case of a disaster when phone lines go down but come on. Their just a bunch of grown boys playing with radios. We now have satellite communications and more people use internet than do Armature Radio. Another Internet service would be good for competition with DSL, Wifi and dial up. You can listen to ham radio with a multi band portable radio and all they do is chitchat. It’s ridiculous. They should pick up a phone. Tell your Congressman to shut it down. If nothing else the frequencies should be auctioned off like the old television frequencies will be.
